Tips to Make Moving with Pets a Walk in the Park
Moving to a new home can be stressful for all members of your family – even your furry friends. While you can talk it out with your children, who may be anxious and stressed about all of the changes, your pets may feel lost and uncertain about all of the activity and move.
Here we have put together ways to ease your pets into going on to a new adventure:
- If there is frenzied activity at your house while packing and getting ready, try to keep your pets out of the way if at all possible. Close the door to rooms that you are packing up and put your dog in the yard while you are actively packing up moving boxes.
- If your pet is not used to a crate, introduce it early on during the moving process. Do not expect your pets to be comfortable in a crate on a long journey in a moving vehicle without some easing into it. Have the crate at your home early and let the pet go inside and outside freely. Fill it with toys, blankets and anything else your pet loves. Consider taking short car rides in a vehicle with your pet in a crate to expose them to the driving process.
- If you do not have your pet microchipped, this is a good time to do it. You want to be able to track down a pet that may get out during the moving process or at your new place. A collar and ID are another easy way to access who the pet is with your phone number easily seen on a tag.
- Have food, treats, snacks and water readily available for the journey to your new place. Stop frequently for your dog to go to the bathroom to avoid any accidents in your vehicle.
- Smaller pets, such as guinea pigs, fish or birds need to be within sight of you or a family member at all times to make sure that they are traveling well. You should never put a pet, cage or crate in the back of a moving truck rental as it can get really hot or cold depending on the time of year.
- Give your dogs and cats leeway at your new place to have time to adjust. Take unwashed linen with you to your new home as the lingering scent of your family will help your pet understand that the new home is now their home as well.
