What to Expect When Renting a Truck

What to Expect When Renting a Truck

If you’re moving, you need a moving truck. But if it’s your first time renting a moving truck, you may not know what to expect when it comes to moving day. Use our roadmap to what to expect when renting a truck to learn more about Elite Truck Rental, our truck rental policies, and how to best prepare for moving day.

1. Expect Your Truck to Be Ready

The first expectation you should have when you are picking up your moving truck is that your truck will be ready to go at the time for which you’ve reserved it. At Elite Truck Rental, we maintain a reservation guarantee, which means we promise to have your truck ready at the day and time you’ve requested it.

While you should expect your truck to be ready, don’t count on moving supplies to be available—such as pallet jacks or dollies—unless you’ve reserved them in advance, too.

2. Expect to Need Insurance and Provide ID

At the time that you pick up your truck, you’ll need to show a valid driver’s license. You’ll also need to be ready to provide a credit card for liability. Finally, expect to need insurance. Sometimes, a personal auto insurance policy will provide truck rental coverage; in most cases, though, purchasing liability insurance directly from the truck rental company is the best option.

3. Expect to Inspect the Truck Prior to Driving Off the Lot

Before you drive the truck off the lot, be sure to first inspect it for damages. If you return the truck with any damage to it, you could be held liable. If you notice scratches, dents, or other signs of a fender-bender, be sure to take time-stamped photos for your records.

4. Expect to Need to Stop for Gas

As you plan your move and think about your timeline and where you’ll stay along the way (if you’re driving an especially far distance), be sure to remember to factor in the amount of time that it will take to stop for gas. Make sure that you factor this into your budget, too! Unfortunately, large moving trucks aren’t great on gas mileage and if you’re traveling a long distance, costs can add up.

5. Expect to Get Your Truck Back on Time

Whether you’re making a one-way trip or plan to return your truck rental to the same location, it’s important that you get your truck rental back on time—most truck rental companies charge an additional fee if the truck is returned late. If you do run into complications and aren’t going to be able to make it to the drop-off location in time, call the truck rental company to let them know in advance.
