Rental Truck vs. Cargo Van: Which Is Better?

At Elite Truck Rental, we offer both rental trucks/moving trucks and cargo vans to our customers throughout Illinois. While both vehicles are great, customers often want to know which is better. Unfortunately, which vehicle is the best for the job depends on a number of different factors. Here’s a look into factors you should consider when deciding whether or not you need a rental truck or a cargo van in Illinois–

How Much Stuff Do You Have?

The primary consideration in deciding which vehicle type to rent is that of how much stuff you have. Obviously, only so much can fit in an Econoline van. If you have more than can fit in a manner that is safe and secure, you should consider a moving truck. If you do decide on a truck, know that we offer 15-foot, 16-foot, and 20-foot trucks for rent. Our Econoline van offers about 250 cubic feet of space. Compare this to our smallest truck (15-foot), which offers 725 cubic feet of space.

What Size of Stuff Do You Have?

It’s not just about the quantity of items that you need to transport, but also the size. Again, if you only need to move a few stackable boxes, or even something a little bit larger and more awkward in size, such as a bicycle, a cargo van will probably be just fine. If you need to move large pieces of furniture, on the other hand, you may want a large vehicle, such as a moving truck.

How Far Are You Going?

While you may not think that distance has a lot to do with it, distance should definitely be something you consider. This is because….

  • If you’re only moving a short distance, you may be totally fine with a smaller vehicle, as taking multiple trips with multiple loads won’t be as much of an issue. For example, if you’re moving a few blocks vs. moving to a new state, vehicle type will make a huge difference.
  • Gas prices can add up. If you can get away with a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle over a longer distance, this may be more economical for you (not to mention more green, too).

Are You Adding Another Driver to Your Policy?

If you’re planning on adding another driver to your policy and the above factors haven’t already helped you to make a decision, your final consideration may be the other driver’s preference. Some drivers may prefer to drive a van over a large truck, for example.
