Moving is something that’s exciting and indicates new beginnings, but it can also be a time of stress and headache, too. What’s more, moving is a lot of work, is time-consuming, and can result in lost or broken items if not done properly. Fortunately, some easy packing tips and tricks when moving can help to mitigate all of these issues. Here are some of our favorites–
When it comes to packing fabrics, one of the best ways to keep things looking clean and organized while also maximizing the amount of space that you have available per box is to roll, rather than fold, items. For example, fold T-shirts into thirds lengthwise, and then roll from the bottom up to create a small, compact item that can be easily packed, or that can be used to pad fragile items, like glasses and other dishware.
Another trick is to roll blankets and sheets. What’s more, do the roll and tuck method. Here’s how it works:
First, fold down about six-12 inches of the edge of the blanket towards you and lie it down flat. The folded side should be fold-side down. Next, fold the blanket into thirds. When you do this, you should notice that the section that you folded creates a little flap on the outside (or facedown side) of the blanket. Then, roll the blanket from the opposite end up. When the blanket has been totally rolled, pull the flap you created in the very first step of the process over the blanket, tucking the rolled section into the flap. This will create a tightly rolled blanket that won’t come undone!
One of the biggest ways to waste time is by packing things that you no longer need. If you have old items that you don’t use and that don’t hold a lot of sentimental value, do yourself a favor by just getting rid of them. Getting rid of old items is the easiest way to cut down on the clutter and reduce the amount of time you have to spend packing and unpacking.
It can be so easy to rush the moving process by trying to throw everything you can wherever it will fit, loading up the moving truck, and just getting to your new location. While this may save time upfront, it can make unpacking a nightmare, especially if you have boxes upon boxes of personal items and need to locate certain items ASAP. The best way to mitigate this is to put like items together and then to use markers to label your boxes. You’ll thank yourself later.
