If you’re moving, you’ll probably need a moving truck. For those who are used to driving much smaller vehicles, a moving truck can be intimidating. At Elite Truck Rental, we want you to be as safe as possible, which is why we’ve put together this list of moving truck driving tips. If you have any specific questions about how to drive our trucks, please feel free to reach out and ask us directly.
One of the most important things to remember when driving a large truck is that these trucks require more room to stop and are more difficult to handle than are smaller cars. As such, it’s important that you slow down. Slowing down decreases your risk of being involved in an accident, and it also decreases the risk of the damages being severe should a crash occur.
Because stopping distance is longer, it’s important that you provide more space between your vehicle and others. While tailgating is never a good idea, it’s even more dangerous when you’re in a large truck. To protect yourself from the unpredictable actions of the driver ahead of you, always give plenty of room between your vehicle and others on the road. The rule of providing more space applies to other things, too–give yourself more space when turning, look for larger parking spaces that aren’t located by other vehicles, and watch out for low-hanging overhead objects, like parking garages and awnings.
Bigger vehicles have bigger blind spots, which means you may not be able to see a vehicle, bicycle, or motorcycle located next to your truck, even when you check your mirrors. As such, before you make a turn or perform a lane change, you always need to check and double-check to make sure your blind spots are clear.
As mentioned above, you need to give yourself more room when turning–larger vehicles can’t make sharp turns. In some cases, you may need to swing to the left before making a right-hand turn. If you do, be sure to make sure that no vehicles attempt to pass you on the right, as this could lead to a serious crash.
In addition to the above, be sure to follow all of the other laws pertaining to safe driving, too. Always go the speed limit (or under it!), always signal before turning, always come to a complete stop at intersections, and never drive while distracted or impaired. If you’re traveling a long distance, we strongly recommend adding another driver to your policy.
