How to Prep for a Road Trip

During the summertime, a road trip is one of the enjoyable activities and a quintessential American experience. While spontaneously getting in the car and hitting the open road might be tempting, putting some thought into your trip can lead to a smoother ride. Here are some tips for prepping for a road trip–

Plan Your Dates

Before you do anything else (besides choose your destination, that is), you should map out exactly when you’ll be going. This will allow you to make any reservations for lodging in advance, as well as secure a rental vehicle should you need one.

Make a Packing List

Making a packing list is a great way to ensure that you don’t forget anything. In addition to the basic essentials–like clothing and road trip snacks–you should also pack a vehicle emergency and repair kit. This should include a first aid kit, non-perishable food items and water, a tire jack, and road flares. Keeping an emergency kit within your vehicle at all times is a good idea, but it is especially important when you’re taking a road trip and will be far from home.

Map Out Your Route

There’s something romantic about the idea of hitting the open road with nothing but a destination in mind and a paper roadmap; however, mapping out your route in advance is the more practical thing to do. Once your route is mapped, be sure to share it with a trusted friend or family member. In the event that there is an emergency, someone will know where you were headed and how to find you.

Rent the Right Vehicle

For some road trips, your personal vehicle may be all you need. If your road trip is a result of you moving, however, or if you’re planning to bring recreational equipment (bikes, camping gear, etc.), you may want a bigger vehicle. For those who are moving, a 15-foot, 16-foot, or 24-foot moving truck may be the perfect solution. And for those who just want to transport large or heavy items, such as recreational equipment, a cargo van is a perfect choice.

It’s not just about renting the right size and type of vehicle, but renting a vehicle from the right company. At Elite Truck Rental, we maintain low-cost truck and van rentals and flexible rental policies designed with our customers in mind.
