Downsizing Before a Move

Downsizing Before a Move

Decluttering and reducing your load before you move will save you time, energy, and money! It is a waste of time to pack up stuff that will just land in the attic at your new place, and if you have fewer moving boxes, then you may be able to rent a smaller – and less expensive – box truck!

Here are tips to help you downsize that go beyond throwing everything into three piles:

  1. Take your time: Downsizing can be a big job! Your belongings have been accumulated over the course of years, so you should not expect to be able to tackle this project in a matter of days. Schedule chunks of time to go through and decide on what you are ready to let go of over the course of time leading up to your move. By not feeling rushed, you can approach the job with a clear head.
  2. Have a system: The thought of reviewing your whole house of stuff can definitely be overwhelming. That is why we recommend that you come up with a system to approach the job that takes little bites of the apple. Going through your belongings room by room is an easy way to approach your downsizing. Do not move on to the next room until you have completed the room that you are working on to help you stay on track.
  3. Know Where It’s Going: As you organize your belongings in the no-go pile, make sure that you have a plan. If you need to toss some items that are not able to be donated due to use, find out the best way to recycle them or have them picked up by your garbage company. Find out where you can donate gently used furniture or clothing or how to sell some larger items that you hope to get some money for.
  4. Be realistic: Sure, some of your belongings hold sentimental value, but be mindful that there is no better time than when you are moving to get rid of stuff. Also, be realistic about your timeframe and if you have time to sell items or if it may be easier to donate or pass along to a friend in need.
