Dos and Don’ts for Moving a Small Business on Your Own

Dos and Don’ts for Moving a Small Business on Your Own

Small businesses have been described as the heartbeat of the American economy, and rightly so. Local business owners help the economy and the community itself. However, it can be challenging to own and run a small business, and sometimes the need to move your business from one place to another is inevitable.

It takes a lot of physical, mental, and emotional energy to be in charge of moving your own company to a new location. The rewards may be worth it, though, when you save time and money doing it yourself. If you are considering a do-it-yourself move for your business, keep the following dos and don’ts in mind.

Do Reduce Your Professional Belongings

Start to prepare for your move well in advance by going through all the things in your office and storage areas. Reducing the stuff you have to move can save money and result in a less cluttered space at the new location of your business. As you go through the things at your place of business, make separate piles for items you want to keep, put in storage, sell, and give away.

You might think of it as pruning your stuff. By getting rid of junk and things that no longer serve the way you do business, you can empower yourself to more easily access the things that you truly love and need.

Don’t Overestimate How Much Time You Have

Knowing that you have a move in the future can be daunting. It may be tempting to simply keep putting off all plans for the event if it is a few months away. However, if you procrastinate and keep putting it off, you may pay the price for it in a very literal sense.

Waiting until the last minute to arrange all you need for a move can mean that you pay more for everything from moving boxes to other your van. If you end up short on time, you won’t have time to shop around, compare prices, and carefully select the things that best serve your business needs for the lowest price.

Do Get Plenty of Packing Materials

Make a packing materials checklist well ahead of time. If you think you need two of something, get three just to be on the safe side. Some items you may want to include on your packing materials list are:

  • Moving boxes
  • Packing tape
  • Tape dispenser
  • Printed labels
  • Moving blankets
  • Markers and pens
  • Bubble wrap
  • Wrapping tissue
  • Packing peanuts
  • Scissors
  • Plastic bins

These are just some of the packing and moving day materials you may need. Be sure to make your own packing list and check off items as you go.

Don’t Forget to Schedule Your Change of Address

Try to put in a change of address form at the post office around two weeks before your company moves. Also, contact any suppliers directly to let them know about the move. Business magazines subscriptions will need to transferred to the new address. You also need to contact anyone who regularly sends mail to your company.

Do Get the Logistics Handled Well Ahead of Time

When you’re in charge of your own move, you need to think of all the details you can plan to make things easier for yourself on moving day. For example, find out where moving trucks are allowed to park at the new home of your business. You may need to make arrangements early or come on a certain day, and some buildings may need you to reserve an elevator. Think through the moving process from start to finish to anticipate and plan for problems.

You also need to make sure that you can handle driving a moving van or truck on your own. If not, be sure to schedule a reliable driver for the day of the move. When doing so, be sure that the driver has several more hours available than you think you’ll need in case something unexpected happens on moving day.

Don’t Neglect to Treat Plants Carefully in a Move

Many place of business have plants in and around primary work areas. Indoor plants create a better ambiance for workers. When you go to move your plants, you need to handle them with extreme care so they won’t be harmed in a DIY move. If you can’t take them with you to the new business location, you may want to donate them to a nursing home or hospital.

Finally, one of the keys to success when it comes to DIY moving for your small business is to get rental trucks or cars from a company you trust. Elite Truck Rental can help make your truck renting experience as easy as possible. You have other things to focus on during a professional move, and it’s important to know your rental truck won’t be a problem.
